Gross pay and take-home pay
Gross pay is what you earn before anything is taken out: hours times the hourly rate, plus overtime, or a salary divided by the number of paychecks. Take-home (net) pay is what is left after federal income tax, Social Security (6.2%), Medicare (1.45%), state income tax in most states, and deductions such as a 401(k) or health insurance.
Nine states do not tax wages: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. Some states also take payroll contributions for disability or paid family leave, such as California SDI or the Washington Cares Fund.
