What counts as a business day

In the US a business day is Monday to Friday, except federal holidays. When a holiday falls on a weekend it is observed on the nearest weekday: Saturday holidays move to Friday, Sunday holidays to Monday. Banks, federal offices and most courts are closed on those days, so deadlines “in 10 business days” skip them.

To find a deadline, the start date itself is not counted: 5 business days from Monday, November 2, 2026 is the next Monday, November 9, as there is no holiday in between. Need hours instead of days? Use the work hours calculator.

Business days questions

How many business days are in 2026?

2026 has 250 business days: weekdays (Monday to Friday) minus the 11 federal holidays observed on a weekday. Next year, 2027, has 249.

Do business days include the start date?

Usually not. “5 business days from Monday” means the next five working days, so the count starts on Tuesday. When you count the days between two dates, the end date is included and the start date is not, unless you tick “Count the start date”.

Are Saturdays business days?

In the US, business days are Monday to Friday, without federal holidays. Banks and most government offices are closed on weekends. If your business works on Saturdays, tick Sat under “Working days”.

Which holidays are skipped?

The 11 federal holidays, on the day they are observed: when a holiday falls on a Saturday it is observed on Friday, and on a Sunday it moves to Monday. State holidays and company days off are not included; untick “Skip federal holidays” if your employer stays open.
