Minutes to decimal hours
Payroll counts time in decimal hours: divide the minutes by 60. 15 minutes is 0.25 hours, 30 minutes is 0.5 and 45 minutes is 0.75, so 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours. Odd minutes give long decimals: 10 minutes is 0.17 and 20 minutes is 0.33 hours, which is why many employers round to the nearest 6 minutes (0.1 hour).
A full-time year is usually counted as 2,080 hours (40 hours × 52 weeks). In 2026 there are 261 weekdays, or 2,088 hours at 8 hours a day; without the 11 federal holidays that is 250 workdays and 2,000 hours.
