How to add hours and minutes

  1. Add all the minutes together.
  2. Divide the minutes by 60: the whole part goes to the hours, the remainder stays as minutes.
  3. Add all the hours, plus the carried hours.
2:45 + 3:30 + 1:50
Minutes: 45 + 30 + 50 = 125 = 2 h 5 min
Hours: 2 + 3 + 1 + 2 = 8 → 8:05

Subtracting time

Subtract the minutes first and borrow an hour (60 minutes) if you need to: 8:05 − 2:45 → 7:65 − 2:45 = 5:20.

Adding up a week of work

Monday 7:45, Tuesday 8:20, Wednesday 8:00, Thursday 7:55, Friday 6:30 adds up to 38:30, or 38.5 decimal hours. If you have start and end times instead of hours, use the time card calculator.

Hours and minutes questions

How do you add hours and minutes?

Add the minutes together and the hours together. Every 60 minutes make one more hour. 1:45 + 2:30: 45 + 30 = 75 minutes = 1 hour 15 minutes; 1 + 2 + 1 = 4 hours; total 4:15.

How do you subtract hours and minutes?

Subtract the minutes first. If there are not enough, borrow one hour as 60 minutes. 5:10 − 2:45: 10 is less than 45, so 5:10 becomes 4:70; 70 − 45 = 25 minutes, 4 − 2 = 2 hours; the answer is 2:25.

How do I multiply hours and minutes by a number?

Convert to minutes, multiply, and convert back. 7:30 × 5 = 450 minutes × 5 = 2,250 minutes = 37 hours 30 minutes. Or use decimals: 7.5 × 5 = 37.5 hours. Open “Multiply or divide the total” to do it here.

Why does the total go over 24 hours?

This is a duration, not a time of day. 26:30 means 26 hours 30 minutes of work (1 day 2 hours 30 minutes), which is what a weekly total should show. A clock would wrap around to 2:30 AM.

How do I convert the total to decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours: 6:45 is 6 + 45 ÷ 60 = 6.75 hours. The calculator shows the decimal total next to the hours and minutes; the decimal hours calculator has a full minutes chart.
